Lessons from Nature: Mold

Everything God created speaks of Him goodness and can often teach lessons He wants us to learn. I am grateful that I am able to see some of these lessons that are hidden in every day things. Over the summer, with the help of my father, I was able to cleanup my basement. After doing the cleaning and applying a fresh coat of paint to the walls and floor I decided to move some furniture down stairs. Unfortunately, I didn’t have climate control in place and with the summer rains it become very humid in the basement. After a few weeks I was down there doing some laundry and I noticed mold had started to grow. I knew it would only continue to grow if not addressed so first I looked for a dehumidifier and started running that to clear up all the extra moisture in the air. Once I knew the humidity was under control I took on the task of cleaning everything. Luckily I got to it before the mold grew too much and started to destroy the furniture. I created a cleaning mixture, got a washcloth, put some rubber gloves on, and started scrubbing everything down with the cleaning solution. As you can imagine, this was no small task so after cleaning about half of the furniture I called it a night. A day or two later I came back to finish the job. It was during this second cleaning session that I got the lesson from nature.

As I was there scrubbing mold off my furniture with my cleaning solution in a bucket on the floor, I saw the similarities between what I was doing and our Christian walk. You see, the furniture is like our lives. The mold is like sin and the cleaning solution is like the power of Jesus Christ. Just like mold, sin is always present but can be kept from ruining us. As mold likes to grow in dark, damp environments, sin also grows and flourishes in the darkness. We need the light of Christ in our lives to reveal and repel sin from taking root and spreading in us. We must first remove ourselves from environments where sin can flourish and into environments where it is difficult for sin to take root or spread. Then enters the cleansing power of Jesus Christ, however we also have a responsibility to work with Him. We need both our efforts and His power to cleanse and uproot the sin in our lives. Without the power of Christ we are just scrubbing with a dry rag which doesn’t do anything but spread the sin around and is very frustrating.

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; Philippians 2:12

However, like the cleaning solution in the bucket on the floor isn’t going to clean the mold without my effort of scrubbing with it, we also must work with Christ to use the power He has given us to forsake our former sinfulness and choose to live rightly. It is by His grace and power that we are able to overcome sin. Like mold left alone, sin will destroy our lives and bring us to ultimate ruin. Our only hope of defeating the sin within us is to completely surrender ourselves to His lordship and to work with Him in the salvation that only He can bring.

“…Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:29-30

It is my prayer that you will join me in surrendering to Christ and to work with Him in all the strength that He has given us to pursue holiness. Allow Him to change us from the inside out and to destroy the sin within us. Let go of those things that seem pleasurable for a moment with the knowledge that those pleasures are only designed to destroy us. Look to heaven and ask our Father to give us desires of purity and righteousness and to cleanse us of anything displeasing to Him. Have faith that He will complete the work that He has started in you, because it is His promise to us.

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15 (ESV)

Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; Philippians 1:6
